Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup opener was nothing short of a disaster, as they scored their lowest total T20I total of 77 runs, only to be defeated by South Africa in 16.2 overs.
Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup campaign got off to a disastrous start as they were bundled out for a mere 77 runs, their lowest-ever total in a T20 international match, against South Africa in the opening game.
Opting to bat first, Sri Lanka’s batting woes began from the outset. Openers only managed a combined score of 22 runs before perishing cheaply. Captain Wanindu Hasaranga and Sadeera Samarawickrama also fell for ducks. None of the remaining batters could provide any significant resistance as South Africa’s bowlers tightened their grip.
Anrich Nortje was the wrecker-in-chief, picking up four wickets for just seven runs in his four overs. Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada chipped in with two wickets each to dismantle the Sri Lankan batting order.
Chasing a paltry target of 78 runs, the Proteas eventually crossed the finish line with 22 balls to spare. While the chase seemed like a formality after Sri Lanka’s disastrous batting display, South Africa’s openers stumbled initially. Reeza Hendricks failed to capitalize, falling cheaply. However, Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen steadied the innings being the top scorers.

Despite early jitters, South Africa maintained control of the chase. Sri Lanka’s captain, Wanindu Hasaranga, provided some resistance with two crucial wickets, while Nuwan Thushara and Dasun Shanaka also picked up wickets. However, David Miller ensured a comfortable finish for the Proteas, smashing a boundary to seal the victory.
