Sri Lanka has announced their playing XI for the first Test against England, with uncapped pacer Milan Rathnayake set to make his debut under the captaincy of Dhananjaya de Silva.
Sri Lanka has revealed their playing XI for the first Test against England, set to begin on August 21 in Manchester. This series consists of three Tests, with the subsequent matches scheduled at Lord’s and The Oval.
The team made only one change from their last Test in Bangladesh, introducing right-arm pacer Milan Rathnayake, who is set to make his international debut, replacing Lahiru Kumara. Rathnayake, who has yet to play at the international level, boasts an impressive domestic record with 81 wickets in 40 first-class matches. Previously included in squads for series against New Zealand and Ireland in 2023, Rathnayake did not feature in any games.
Dhananjaya de Silva will continue as captain, leading a side that includes seasoned players like Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, and Angelo Mathews. The bowling attack features a lone specialist spinner, Prabath Jayasuriya, and a pace trio of Asitha Fernando, Vishwa Fernando, and debutant Milan Rathnayake.
Sri Lanka last played a Test series in England in 2016, where they were defeated 0-2. Currently, they are in strong form, having won three of their last four series and sitting fourth in the 2023-25 WTC.
