Lahiru Thirimanne, a former Sri Lankan cricketer who captained the team during his tenure, was recently injured in a car accident.
Ex-Sri Lankan cricketer, Lahiru Thirimanne, met with a car accident on March 14th while visiting a temple with his family. The incident occurred in the Thirapanne area of Anuradhapura.
According to reports, Thirimanne’s car collided with a lorry, causing significant damage to the vehicle. While the scene of the accident was described as disturbing, thankfully, Thirimanne sustained only minor injuries. He is reportedly free from any major amputations, bringing relief to his family and supporters.
The report issued by the New York Strikers franchise of the Legends Cricket Trophy 2024 confirmed the safety of Lahiru Thirimanne. The report read, “We wish to inform you that Lahiru Thirimanne and his family were involved in a small car accident while visiting the temple. Thankfully, they have been admitted to the hospital for observation. Fortunately, following a thorough medical assessment, we can confirm that they are all safe and sound, with no cause for concern. We appreciate the outpouring of concern and support from everyone during this time. We kindly request respect for their privacy as they recover,” as quoted by NewsWire.
Thirimanne, 34, retired from cricket in 2022. Although he is no longer actively playing, the news of his accident has sparked concern among the cricketing community.
The former Sri Lankan skipper and batter was identified as a promising talent early in his career, making his debut at 21. He became a regular member of the national squad but often found himself on the bench. After experienced players like Tillakaratne Dilshan retired, Thirimanne took on a more prominent role, even captaining the team in Angelo Mathews’ absence.
Cricket fans are now wishing for the batter’s speedy recovery and wish to see him again in the New York Strikers’ jersey.
