Sri Lankan batter Dinesh Chandimal left the second Test against Bangladesh due to a family medical emergency.
Sri Lankan batter Dinesh Chandimal has left the ongoing second Test against Bangladesh in Chattogram due to a pressing family medical emergency. However, details surrounding the nature of the emergency have not been made public. The departure came on the fourth day of the Test, as Sri Lanka looked to extend their significant lead against Bangladesh.
Chandimal played both innings for Sri Lanka, contributing 59 runs in their dominant first-inning total of 531. However, he was dismissed for just nine runs in the second inning before his departure.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has released a statement expressing their full support for Chandimal. “Sri Lanka Cricket, his teammates, and the coaching staff fully support Dinesh Chandimal at this moment of need and request that the public respect his and his family’s privacy,” a report from News Wire read.
Subsequently, Chandimal’s absence created a gap in the Sri Lankan batting line-up. Nevertheless, the team will be allowed to field a substitute fielder for the remainder of the match during Bangladesh’s second inning.
Notably, this incident recalled a similar situation involving Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Ashwin was forced to withdraw from the third Test against England due to his mother’s illness. While Ashwin managed to rejoin the team for the final inning, Chandimal’s return for the remainder of the test seems uncertain.
The Bangladeshi team will now look to capitalise on Chandimal’s absence and fight back against Sri Lanka’s lead of 1-0 in the test to end the two-match test series in a draw.
