Steve Smith Impresses Again
Steve Smith credited faith and trust in his game as he overcame a lean spell to score back-to-back Test hundreds against India.
Steve Smith, Australia’s batting stalwart, revealed his mindset during a challenging period before his resurgence with consecutive Test centuries against India in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Smith, who ended an 18-month drought with a hundred in Brisbane, followed it up with another century at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday, equalling Sunil Gavaskar’s record of 34 Test tons.
Reflecting on his lean phase, Smith said he always believed in his abilities even when the runs weren’t flowing. “Sometimes you can be hitting the ball really nicely, which I think I said to all you guys when I wasn’t scoring the runs. I actually felt like I was batting pretty well. And there’s a difference, I think, between being out of form and out of runs,” Smith explained at the day-end press conference.
The Australian batter stressed the importance of perseverance and faith. “You’ve got to have faith. You’ve got to have a bit of trust in what you’re trying to do. I’ve played the game for long enough now to know that you can have your ups and downs,” he said, adding that luck also plays a role in making big scores.

“I think you need a lot of luck on these wickets to get big runs as well, the ones we’re playing at the moment. And last week I had my fair share. I think I got an umpire’s call and got beaten on numerous occasions as to on other days, I would nick it,” Smith said.
On the second day of the fourth Test, Smith and skipper Pat Cummins added crucial runs, helping Australia maintain their dominance. When asked about their approach, Smith said there was no fixed strategy. “There wasn’t really a general plan. It was just go out there and play. I thought Patty (Cummins) played really nicely. Really good, positive intent,” concluded Smith
Notably, Smith is now on track to surpass 10,000 Test runs before the series concludes, cementing his status as one of Australia’s all-time greats.
