Steve Smith’s recent dip in form has sparked debate over his inclusion in the upcoming T20 World Cup squad, though Smith remains unfazed.
Amid recent challenges in his performance, Australian veteran batsman Steve Smith finds himself under scrutiny. Struggling to find form with the bat in recent matches, concerns have been raised regarding his inclusion in the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, notably voiced by teammate Matthew Wade.
Australia recently secured victory in the three-match T20I series against New Zealand with utter dominance. However, Smith only managed to score a total of 15 runs across the last two matches, prompting Wade’s comment.
“Smithy hasn’t played a heap of T20 cricket in the last little bit for Australia… It’s going to be tough to squeeze in that 15, whoever you are… Fingers crossed, he makes it,” he said.
Smith, however, appeared to be nonchalant against these uncertainties. “Look, it wasn’t ideal, but it is what it is, and whatever will be, will be from here. I’m not sure what (selectors) want to do. I’m not too fussed either way. If I’m there, I’m there. If I’m not, I’m not.” Smith said while addressing AAP.
The Aussie batter also shared his thoughts about the conditions during the match and the bowlers that caused him to bag such low scores.
“I got a couple of decent balls to be fair. (Adam) Milne got one to take off in the second game, which was tough. Lockie, when that sun was setting, it was quite difficult to pick up and he gave me a nice in-swinger” Smith said.
With high speculations surrounding the selection of Smith and players that are strengthening the roster, it will be a tough job for the Australian Cricket Association (ACA) to pick the 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup season ahead in June.
