Virat Kohli, fresh off his IPL 2024 top scorer title, was tipped to be the leading run-scorer in the T20 World Cup by former Australian batsman Steven Smith.
Cricket legends Steven Smith and Graeme Smith have weighed in on who might be the leading run-scorer at the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Steve Smith has placed his bet on Virat Kohli, citing his excellent form in IPL 2024 where he emerged as the tournament’s top scorer with 741 runs in 15 matches. Smith believes Kohli will carry this momentum into the World Cup and challenge for the top-scorer title.
The slower pitch conditions at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, evident during the Sri Lanka-South Africa match, could pose challenges for batters. In such a scenario, Kohli’s experience as an anchor player could prove crucial for India’s success.
“My top run-getter for this tournament will be Virat Kohli. He is coming off a terrific IPL and he is bringing in some great form and I think he will be the leading run-getter,” Smith said in a video shared by the International Cricket Council.

Graeme Smith, the former South African captain, has a broader view, suggesting that either Virat Kohli or England’s Jos Buttler could be in the running for the top-scorer title. Buttler recently displayed good form in the T20I series against Pakistan, scoring 84 and 39 runs before rain washed out the other two matches. “I am going with a top-order batter. Virat Kohli or Jos Buttler,” said Graeme.
Meanwhile, England will kick off their campaign against Scotland on June 4th. Team India, led by Rohit, will begin their World Cup journey against Ireland on June 5th. Kohli is expected to open alongside Rohit Sharma, with young talent Yashasvi Jaiswal likely to wait for his chance.
