Sunil Gavaskar: Reddy Key for India in Melbourne

Sunil Gavaskar backed Nitish Kumar Reddy’s inclusion in India’s XI for the Boxing Day Test, citing his consistent lower-order contributions in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has strongly supported the inclusion of young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy in India’s playing XI for the Boxing Day Test against Australia in Melbourne. Praising the 21-year-old’s reliable performances with the bat during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Gavaskar stressed that leaving him out of this crucial match would be a mistake.
Speaking to Star Sports, Gavaskar highlighted Reddy’s importance in the team setup, particularly in the lower-middle order. “They can’t drop Nitish Kumar Reddy. He is the fourth seamer. I can’t see India going in with just two pacers and Nitish. For me, it is pretty much this XI that plays in Melbourne,” he stated.
Reddy has emerged as a dependable figure in India’s lineup, providing stability with the bat at a time when other players have struggled for consistency. Despite his modest impact with the ball in the current series, his ability to serve as a backup seamer adds crucial depth to the squad.
India’s bowling combination has been a topic of significant discussion following Ravichandran Ashwin’s surprise retirement after the drawn third Test in Brisbane. His departure has left a void in the spin department, with Tanush Kotian stepping in as his replacement.
The seam-friendly conditions at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) could heavily influence India’s team selection. With Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Akash Deep expected to lead the pace attack, Reddy’s dual skills as a batsman and seam bowler could solidify his place.

However, India is also likely to include two spinners—Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar—given their all-round abilities. This approach might limit opportunities for additional seamers, sparking debates over whether Reddy should play as the fourth pacer or make way for a more experienced bowler.
The fourth Test, starting December 26, promises to be a decisive clash as India looks to take the series lead. Fans eagerly await the squad announcement and the tactical decisions that could define the outcome of this high-stakes encounter.
