Sunil Gavaskar emphasized that apart from their exceptional batting skills, the fielding abilities and leadership qualities of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are crucial for the team’s success in the T20 World Cup.
On January 5th, the ICC released the schedule for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, sparking discussions about the anticipated return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. India, in Group A with Pakistan and the USA, is set to face Pakistan on June 9 in New York.

Both Kohli and Rohit have been absent from T20Is since India’s exit from the 2022 tournament. Kohli’s heroics against Pakistan in the last encounter are remembered, but neither he nor Rohit has played a T20I since India’s semifinal loss to England in 2022.
When speaking on Star Sports, legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar stressed the need for Rohit and Kohli’s return to the T20 World Cup. He highlighted their batting, fielding, and leadership as crucial for the team’s success.
“Virat Kohli’s form has been outstanding for the past 1.5 years. He also played brilliantly at the ODI World Cup. So, there should not be any debate over his batting prowess in limited-overs cricket. A massive aspect is that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are still excellent fielders,” Gavaskar said.
“Sometimes, you get slow when you are 35-36; your throw isn’t that good anymore. So, there are discussions over where to keep you while setting the field. That’s not a problem for these two because they are still terrific fielders. In addition to seniority in the dressing room, they will contribute on the field, too. We don’t know if Rohit will be captain, but whatever the case, any captain will surely benefit from that,” he added.
Team India’s upcoming schedule includes hosting Afghanistan for three T20Is before starting a series of five Tests against England later this month.
