Sunil Gavaskar, speaking to Star Sports, expressed confidence in Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Test prowess for the upcoming South Africa series, citing the young batsman’s ability to patiently play the ball.
Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has expressed confidence in Yashasvi Jaiswal’s potential ahead of the forthcoming Test series in South Africa. Emphasizing the youngster’s adept temperament, Gavaskar praised Jaiswal’s batting style, noting his precise technique in playing the ball late, maintaining a composed head, and aligning well with the ball’s line.
Jaiswal, who debuted against the West Indies earlier this year, showcased remarkable red-ball performances, notably a splendid 171-run innings followed by a strong 95-run contribution in his subsequent match.
“Yes, it’s going to be a test for him. But I do believe that he has got the capability to thrive in these conditions too. What I have seen of him in Test matches is that he plays the ball very late, his head is very still, he gets into the line quite nicely. He is not looking to rush at the ball. He plays it very late, he loves to give himself time in the middle,” Gavaskar said when talking on Star Sports.
Jaiswal gained valuable exposure in South Africa during the recent T20I series against the Proteas. Despite a duck in the second T20I, he bounced back with an impressive 60-run knock in the third match.
Gavaskar also underlined the significance of surviving the initial overs against the Proteas’ bowling attack in the forthcoming Test series. Stressing on the impact of the Kookaburra ball in South African conditions, Gavaskar highlighted that the first 12 overs are crucial, as afterward, the ball tends to lose its sting. He advised Jaiswal and the Indian batters to focus on weathering the first 10-12 overs, believing that solidifying their innings during this period would pave the way for substantial run-scoring opportunities.
