Sunil Gavaskar expressed concerns over Rishabh Pant’s return to IPL 2024, highlighting the impact of his previous injuries on his performance and emphasizing the importance of prioritizing his health.
Star Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant faced severe injuries in a car accident in December 2022, forcing him out of action for the entire 2023 season. With the IPL 2024 on the horizon, Pant is eyeing a comeback, aiming to lead the Delhi Capitals and play a pivotal role in the tournament.
While speaking on Star Sports, former Indian cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar expressed his admiration for Pant, emphasizing the importance of allowing him sufficient time to regain full fitness. Gavaskar highlighted concerns about Pant’s knee injury affecting his explosive batting style but remained optimistic about his return.
“I’m also a big fan of him. For me, the most important thing is he should be healthy like before, so that he can come and entertain us. It will be very difficult for him and it will take some time for him to get that batting fluency. But good that he has started training,” Gavaskar said.
“Knee plays a pivotal role in batting as well as keeping – which of course he may not do initially. Maybe he won’t be the usual Rishabh Pant that we are used to seeing. He certainly has the ability to think on his feet. If he gets back to full fitness, the reins of (Delhi Capitals) captaincy should be handed over to him. Let’s stay hopeful. This season is first of him coming back to full fitness. Let’s not rush him into doing something that there will be a setback,” he added.

Reportedly, Pant is in the final phase of his recovery at the National Cricket Academy. Delhi Capitals are closely monitoring his progress. If he does not fully recover before the IPL starts on March 22, he could play a limited role as an Impact player due to fitness concerns.
