Sunil Gavaskar Questions Team India’s Selection Decision

Shubman Gill’s Participation in Doubt for First Test Against NZ

Sunil Gavaskar and Sanjay Manjrekar expressed surprise over the Indian team management’s decision to drop Shubman Gill for the Boxing Day Test against Australia.

Legendary Indian batter and former captain Sunil Gavaskar was surprised by the Indian team management’s decision to drop Shubman Gill from the playing XI for the ongoing Boxing Day Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Gill, who made his Test debut for India in the 2020 Boxing Day Test at the same venue, was left out on Thursday, with Washington Sundar replacing him.

Gavaskar, who is currently in Australia for commentary duties, expressed his surprise at Gill’s exclusion. Speaking on Channel 7, he stated that while he had no issue with Sundar’s inclusion, which would allow the Tamil Nadu all-rounder to bowl a significant number of overs for the Rohit Sharma-led side, he believed that if Sundar had to play, he should have replaced Nitish Kumar Reddy instead of Gill.

“Well, I think there was one change expected, but I’m a little bit surprised that they’ve dropped Shubman Gill and that they’ve taken Washington Sundar. No problem with Washington Sundar because he will bowl a lot. He will get to bowl a lot. But if Washington Sundar had to come in place of anybody, I thought it should have been in place of Nitish Kumar Reddy,” Gavaskar said.

Further commenting on the team’s dynamics, Gavaskar noted, “If you’re batting at No. 8 and bowling about 10 overs, you’re not the fourth bowler that they’re looking for. But this looks like a very good batting line-up. At the moment, the top order hasn’t clicked. If the top order clicks, then India should be able to get loads of runs on this pitch.”

Nevertheless, gavaskar’s questioning stands tall as team India is urgently seeking answers following underwhelming performances in the last two Tests of the series, which is currently tied at 1-1. Speaking of MCG, the Australian team have been at the giving end as they dominated India for the major part of the first day.
