India captain Suryakumar Yadav gave a cheeky reply on Sanju Samson’s selection ahead of Asia Cup 2025.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav was at his entertaining best during the captains’ press conference before the Asia Cup 2025 in the United Arab Emirates. The 34-year-old lifted the mood with a witty remark when asked about Sanju Samson’s place in the playing XI.

Samson’s selection has been under discussion ever since Shubman Gill returned to the T20I squad. With Gill reinstated as vice-captain, there has been speculation that Samson could be sidelined despite his recent strong performances at the top of the order. Comments from BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar have also intensified the debate, as he hinted that balance in the team could dictate the final call.

Suryakumar, however, chose humour to handle the question on Samson. “Sir, I shall message you the playing XI. But yes, we are really taking good care of him and don’t worry, we shall make the right decision,” he said, smiling at reporters.

Since Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach, Samson has enjoyed his most consistent run in international cricket. The Kerala batter scored three T20I centuries in 2024 and struck a strong opening partnership with Abhishek Sharma, giving India explosive starts. His performances suggested he had finally settled at the highest level after years of inconsistent opportunities.

But Gill’s comeback has added a layer of complexity. With leadership responsibilities on his shoulders, management may look at Gill as part of long-term planning. This could push Samson into a tricky spot despite his recent record.

For now, Suryakumar has kept things under wraps, avoiding any confirmation on the final XI. Whether India continues with the Samson-Abhishek combination or gives Gill another chance will be revealed only once the tournament begins. India will start their Asia Cup campaign against hosts UAE on Sunday, September 14, in Dubai.
