Suryakumar Yadav shared how Rohit Sharma’s stirring huddle speech, emphasizing collective effort and commitment, motivated India to their T20 World Cup 2024 win against South Africa.
Rohit Sharma has made history as the second Indian captain, following Mahendra Singh Dhoni, to lead India to victory in the T20 World Cup. After experiencing setbacks in two ICC finals last year—the WTC and ODI World Cup—Rohit faced intense pressure to break India’s decade-long drought in ICC titles. Leading by example, he delivered performances against tough opponents like England and Australia, guiding India through an unbeaten tournament.
Ahead of the crucial final against South Africa, Rohit Sharma demonstrated his leadership with bold decisions, including promoting Axar Patel up the batting order and effectively managing the bowling lineup with Ravindra Jadeja. He also delivered an impactful speech to the team, urging each player to give their all. Suryakumar Yadav later revealed that Rohit’s words deeply moved everyone present, emphasizing the need for collective effort and commitment to achieve the win.
“‘I can’t climb this mountain alone. If I have to reach the peak, I will need everyone’s oxygen. He also said, ‘Joh bhi hai, paon mein, dimag mein, dil mein (Whatever you have in your legs, mind and heart), just bring everything to the game. If that happens, we will not regret the night’. We all were moved,” Suryakumar quoted Rohit when speaking to the Indian Express.

Suryakumar also highlighted Rohit’s special qualities as a captain, noting how the veteran cricketer builds strong connections with his team both on and off the field.
“He connects with the players. Off the field, be it in a hotel room, or on the beach, he connects with everyone. So when a crunch situation comes, players know that he (Rohit) will back us. One feels I have to deliver for this man for the confidence and respect he gives to everyone,” he said.
In the match, South Africa appeared in control, needing just 30 runs from the final 30 balls with six wickets in hand during their first-ever World Cup final. Needing 16 runs in the final over, David Miller faced a crucial situation. He started well by hitting a Hardik Pandya full-toss for a six, but a spectacular catch by Suryakumar Yadav at long-off ended his innings and dashed South Africa’s hopes.
This dismissal devastated the team, and they struggled to find the necessary big hits, finishing at 169/8 in 20 overs. Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya then expertly closed out the match, securing India’s long-awaited ICC tournament title after 11 years.
