India’s opening match in the T20 World Cup has been a banger, as Rohit and Co. dominated Ireland by eight wickets.
India got their T20 World Cup campaign off to a flying start, dismantling Ireland for a mere 96 runs in 16 overs at Nassau County Stadium in New York. Opting to bowl first, India displayed a clinical bowling performance, led by Hardik Pandya’s three-wicket haul. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh chipped in with two wickets each, while Axar Patel and Mohammad Siraj took one wicket apiece.
Ireland’s batting lineup faltered under the pressure of India’s pace and spin attack. Openers Andrew Balbirnie and skipper Paul Stirling failed to provide a solid foundation, and the middle order crumbled soon after. Only Gareth Delany managed a score of significance, reaching 26 runs.

Chasing a modest target of 97 runs, the Men in Blue’s batting performance was not flawless, but they secured a convincing eight-wicket victory over Ireland. Captain Rohit Sharma, who impressed with a 52-run knock before retiring hurt, laid the foundation for the chase. However, a dip in form saw Virat Kohli dismissed cheaply for just one run by Ireland’s Mark Adair. Suryakumar Yadav also fell victim to Ben White’s bowling.
Despite the mini-stumble, Rishabh Pant stepped up to see the match to the end. He hit McCarthy for a six in the second ball of the 13th over to continue his unbeaten score of 36 runs and sealed the victory for India.
