In a stunning upset, Afghanistan defeated Australia by 21 runs in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup. Chasing a target of 149 runs set by Afghanistan, Australia’s batting faltered throughout the innings.
Openers David Warner (3) and Travis Head fell cheaply to Naveen-ul-Haq and Mohammad Nabi, respectively. Mitch Marsh (12) threatened briefly with a couple of boundaries but was caught by Mohammad Nabi off Naveen’s bowling. Wickets continued to tumble for Australia, with Glenn Maxwell (59) being the lone bright spot. He struck a fifty but fell prey to Gulbadin Naib in the 15th over.

Gulbadin Naib was the best of the Afghan bowlers, claiming four wickets for just 20 runs in his four overs. Rashid Khan, the Afghan captain, also chipped in with a crucial wicket, removing Matthew Wade (5). Australia was eventually bowled out for 127 runs in the 20th over, falling short of the target.
Earlier, Afghanistan had posted a competitive total of 148 runs on the board. The top order built a sustainable partnership of 118 runs for the rest of the innings, which helped the Afghanis propel to a defendable score. Nevertheless, this victory is a significant one for Afghanistan, solidifying their position in the tournament and showcasing their bowling strengths on the big stage.
