Teen Australian cricketer Ben Austin tragically died after being hit in the neck by a ball during a training session in Melbourne.

Seventeen-year-old cricketer Ben Austin has died after being struck by a ball during a practice session in Melbourne. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening at Walley Tew Reserve in Ferntree Gully, where Ben was facing deliveries from an automatic bowling machine. Despite wearing a helmet, the ball hit him on the neck and he collapsed immediately.

Medical teams arrived shortly before 5 p.m. and rushed him to Monash Children’s Hospital after providing first aid. Ben was placed on life support but succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning. The Ferntree Gully Cricket Club confirmed his death, describing it as a heartbreaking loss for the local cricket community.

Association president Arnie Walters said Ben was both talented and well-liked. The club extended heartfelt condolences to his family and expressed gratitude to Ambulance Victoria, local police, and hospital staff for their support.

“Absolutely devastated by the tragic passing of one of its players and the teenager’s death will be felt by all in our cricket community,” the statement read.

“To all of those who knew Ben and the joy that he brought. We ask you to please respect the privacy of Ben’s family during this time. Our club and community have lost a truly great young person who was developing into a fine young adult, and his loss will be felt keenly by our club for many years to come,” the post added.

Apart from cricket, Ben was also a dedicated Aussie Rules footballer and represented the Waverley Park Hawks Junior Football Club in more than 100 games.
