Sunil Gavaskar clarified his statement on calling Dhruv Jurel another MS Dhoni.
Dhruv Jurel is now a familiar name amidst the cricketing fraternity as the young wicket-keeper batsman collected a lot of praise from several experts and cricket fans. During the England versus India series, the debutant left a significant mark at Rajkot by getting the highest score by an Indian wicket-keeper on a Test debut in 90 years. Sehwag praised Jurel for his efforts as Anil Kumble envisioned him being the next MS Dhoni. The legendary skipper Sunil Gavaskar also commended the 23-year-old and shared his views that Dhruv Jurel has the same game awareness and traits as Dhoni.
Gavaskar made a bold statement in the middle of the game when he called Jurel “another MS DHoni in the making”. However, during an interview with Sports Tak, he clarified that while he may have similar traits to Dhoni, replacing him and filling his shoes is still a distant dream for the young batter. “When MS Dhoni was of his age, he too had the same situation awareness. And that is why I said, Jurel is like MS Dhoni. No one can become MS Dhoni. There is only one MS Dhoni. But if Jurel can manage to do even some portion of the things Dhoni did, then it would be great for Indian cricket”, the 74-year-old told Sports Tak.
In praise for Jurel’s game awareness, Gavaskar added, “The way he thinks about the game, the way he assesses the situation and bats accordingly, gives me the MS Dhoni feels. He would hit a six in between and then look for ones and twos to rotate the strike… Even in keeping, the way he gathered that wayward throw and ran out Ben Duckett and then took a brilliant catch of Jimmy (James) Anderson who went for the reverse sweep.”
The Agra born has not yet been included in the annual BCCI contract. However, as he has secured a position in the playing XI and is ranked higher than KS Bharat in the roster, he might be included in the annual contract as a Grade C player.
