New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee received a reprimand for damaging equipment after his dismissal during their T20 World Cup defeat.

The ICC has reprimanded New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee for breaching their Code of Conduct during his team’s T20 World Cup match against the West Indies in Trinidad.

The incident occurred after Tim Southee’s dismissal in the 18th over. On his way back to the pavilion, he damaged a hand sanitiser dispenser, which is a violation of Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. This article deals with “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures and fittings during an international match.”

Tim Southee admitted his mistake and accepted the punishment proposed by David Boon of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. This penalty included an official reprimand and one demerit point added to his disciplinary record. It’s important to note that this was Southee’s first offence in the past 24 months. The Level 1 breach carries a range of potential sanctions, including a reprimand, a fine of up to half a player’s match fee, or one to two demerit points.

This incident added insult to injury for New Zealand, who were already facing elimination after their heavy defeat to the West Indies. The loss against Afghanistan in their opening match, where they were bundled out for 75 runs, had put them in a dangerous position. With their latest defeat, the Black Caps are officially out of contention for the Super 8 stage. Their remaining matches against Papua New Guinea and Uganda will be inconsequential.
