Tom Moody praised Rohit Sharma’s leadership for communicating with Rinku after his T20 World Cup exclusion.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s interaction with batter Rinku Singh has garnered praise from former Australian cricketer Tom Moody. The conversation took place after the T20 World Cup press conference in Mumbai.
Rinku’s omission from the World Cup squad sparked debate, with many critical of the decision. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified that the selection was based on team balance, not individual performance.
Moody then commended Sharma’s leadership in personally addressing Rinku. “That’s great leadership right there. Make sure you’re upfront and honest. It’s always harder to have these conversations with players who are left out,” said Moody, as quoted by India Today.
Moody highlighted Sharma’s strong communication skills and the respect he commands within the team. “That’s why Rohit is so highly regarded around the playing group. He has those soft skills, which are so important for good communication,” Moody explained.
Moody then shed light on the reasoning behind Rinku Singh’s exclusion from the T20 World Cup squad. He emphasised that the decision was purely based on team composition, with the selection committee prioritising the additional flexibility offered by all-rounder Axar Patel. This allows India to potentially play three spinners and have more strategic options at the No. 7 batting position.

While Rinku Singh’s omission sparked discussion, his exclusion did not reflect his individual abilities. He will still travel with the team to the USA and the Caribbean as a reserve player, as the country will have their first outing against Ireland on June 5th to start off the global tournament.
