Tom Moody compared Cummins’ decision-making to MS Dhoni’s, highlighting how both are willing to make unconventional choices that leave others questioning why they hadn’t considered the same approach.

In the IPL 2024 match at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Pat Cummins led Sunrisers Hyderabad to a stunning victory over Chennai Super Kings by six wickets, igniting wild celebrations among the home fans. Cummins displayed remarkable leadership in the IPL 2024 game, surprising many with his strategic choices.

Former Australian cricketer and SRH coach Tom Moody praised Cummins’ unconventional captaincy style, likening it to the legendary MS Dhoni. Cummins’ choice to start with Abhishek Sharma over Bhuvneshwar Kumar caught attention. Despite other viable options, the skipper committed to his decision, showing conviction in his strategy from the outset, reminiscent of Dhoni’s decisive leadership.

“The one thing I like about Cummins is he is a bit like MS Dhoni. He is prepared to make a decision that most people don’t think about but makes you feel like ‘Why didn’t I think about that?,” Moody told ESPNcricinfo.

“Like the Abhishek Sharma over. It was quite an odd decision when you look at the other options they could have gone with. You have arguably the best new ball bowler in IPL history in Bhuvneshwar Kumar. You have got an off-spinner against left-handers. You think Markram would be another one. There were plenty of other ways he could have gone. But he committed to that and it looked like from the get-go, he convinced himself that it was the right decision,” he added.

After the win, SRH rose to fifth in the IPL 2024 standings with four points and a notable net run rate of +0.409, largely due to their home performances. Attention now shifts to their upcoming clash against Punjab Kings on April 9 in Chandigarh.
