Travis Head expressed interest in keeping the conversation alive about his potential return as a Test opener.
After a stunning 154 against England in the first ODI at Trent Bridge on Thursday, Australia’s Travis Head is brimming with confidence and aims to keep the conversation alive regarding his potential reappointment as a Test opener.
Following the match-winning innings, Head, who was named Player of the Match, was asked whether he would be open to taking on the Test opener role again. He responded with a smile, saying, “Yeah, keep the chatter; it makes it interesting. I’m not going to dive into that. I’ll just let that play out.”
Though Head currently plays as an opener in limited-overs cricket, he previously acknowledged that opening in Test matches requires specialised skills. However, Test opener Usman Khawaja has backed the idea of moving Head up the order while shifting Steve Smith back to his original No. 4 position. “He’s obviously been very successful opening the batting in one-day cricket, and, breaking it down, I’d probably lean towards him,” Khawaja stated.
Travis Head Delivers As An Opener
Head’s last stint as a Test opener came during the India tour last year in David Warner’s absence. He impressed with 223 runs at an average of 55 across five innings, including a 90-run knock in Ahmedabad. His standout moment as a Test opener occurred during the World Test Championship final against India at the Oval, where he scored a magnificent 163 to guide Australia to victory.
Later in the year, Head delivered another exceptional performance, scoring 137 in the ODI World Cup final against India, completing Australia’s ICC trophy cabinet.

Reflecting on his recent ODI heroics against England, Head said, “Happy days. Hopefully, there’ll be more in two days’ time.” With David Warner now retired from international cricket, Steve Smith was promoted to open alongside Khawaja.
