Trent Boult

Trent Boult announced his retirement from T20 World Cups after his team’s disappointing group-stage exit, but expressed faith in the team’s young talent.

Legendary New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult has confirmed that the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 will be his last outing in the marquee event. Boult, considered one of the best pacers in New Zealand’s cricketing history, ends his T20 World Cup career on a high note, finishing as the team’s leading wicket-taker in the 2024 edition with 7 wickets. However, this individual achievement is overshadowed by New Zealand’s disappointing group-stage exit from the tournament.

“Speaking on behalf of myself, this will be my last T20 World Cup. That’s all I have to say,” Boult declared at a press conference following New Zealand’s consolation win against Uganda.

The victory over Uganda, their first in the tournament, came a little too late for the Black Caps. Earlier defeats to Afghanistan and the West Indies sealed their fate, resulting in a surprisingly early exit.

“Definitely (it was) not the start we wanted in the tournament. A hard one to take. Just gutted we’re not going any further. But any time you get to represent the country, it’s a proud moment,” Boult reflected on the team’s performance.

Despite the setback, Boult expressed his unwavering faith in the team’s future. “There’s a lot of pride in the dressing room and in playing for the country, we’ve had some great records across however many years. Unfortunately, we’ve been off the ball the last couple of weeks and that’s what it takes to not qualify,” he acknowledged.

“It’s unfortunate, but there’s still some tremendous talent inside that dressing room and coming through the ranks in New Zealand cricket, so we’re a proud nation and we’ll continue to go that way,” Boult concluded with optimism, highlighting the talent pool within New Zealand cricket.

The Black Caps have one final group-stage match against Papua New Guinea before they shift their focus to their upcoming three-match Test series against England at home.
