The ICC caused controversy by requiring Uganda to modify their T20 World Cup jersey design due to sponsor logo visibility concerns.

The T20 World Cup is just around the corner, but a controversy has emerged involving Uganda’s debut at the prestigious tournament.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) requested that Uganda alter their national jersey design shortly before the event. The ICC cited concerns about the visibility of sponsor logos being hampered by the original design. This request sparked controversy as the design was chosen through a fan competition won by Elijah Mangeni, who drew inspiration from the country’s national bird, the crowned grey crane.

The area around the shoulder sleeves, however, clashed with the sponsor logos. To address this issue, Uganda modified the existing jerseys by making the feathered area more transparent, impacting roughly 20% of the original design. The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) explained the situation through their public relations officer, Musali Denis. Denis stated that, due to time constraints, a complete redesign was not feasible. Therefore, Uganda opted to modify the existing jerseys to comply with ICC guidelines. The modified jerseys were officially unveiled before the team’s departure for the West Indies.

“The ICC asked for a change in the design, but we didn’t have enough time to make the required changes and had to compromise on the winning design. We lost just about 20 percent of the original design, but the rest of the design is the same,” Denis said according to cricket.com.au.

For the unreserved, Uganda’s qualification for the T20 World Cup is a historic achievement. They secured their spot after defeating established cricketing nation, Zimbabwe. Now, the “Men in Yellow,” as they are being called, will begin their World Cup journey against Afghanistan in Guyana on June 3rd.
