According to reports by The Indian Express, Mohammed Shami is unlikely to play in the initial two England Tests as he hasn’t started bowling yet, but there’s hope for his participation in the third Test.
Mohammed Shami, the seasoned pacer, is likely to miss the initial two Tests against England, starting on January 25. After disclosing that he played through discomfort during the 2023 ODI World Cup, Shami has been advised to take a break to recover from an ankle injury. Consequently, he was already sidelined from the recent two-match Test series against South Africa.
Despite ongoing rehabilitation, Shami hasn’t commenced bowling in practice sessions. Officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) anticipate Shami’s fitness evaluation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) before confirming his spot in the Test squad.
When speaking to The Indian Express, a source from the Indian board expressed doubts about Shami’s readiness, suggesting he might not feature in the initial Tests against England. However, there remains hope for his inclusion in the squad for the third Test in Rajkot if he manages a successful recovery stint at the NCA.
“Shami hasn’t even started to bowl, he will have to go to NCA and prove his fitness. He looks doubtful for the first two Tests against England, ” Indian Express quoted the source as saying.
Named in the Test squad against South Africa on November 30, Shami’s participation depended on his recovery post-treatment. However, the BCCI might proceed cautiously given the availability of pace bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah for the upcoming five-match Test series versus England. Furthermore, considering the importance of spin in home conditions, the team management might delay Shami’s return to ensure his complete recuperation.
