Aaron Jones smashed a record-breaking 94 runs off 40 balls to lead USA to a stunning victory against Canada in the T20 World Cup opener.
Co-hosts USA kicked off the T20 World Cup 2024 in style, securing a thrilling victory against Canada in the tournament opener on Sunday, June 2nd (IST) in Texas.
Despite facing an uphill battle after Canada posted a strong total of 195 runs, the American batters displayed remarkable counter-attacking spirit to chase down the target in just 17.4 overs.
Canada started well with the ball, dismissing two early American wickets. However, the tide turned dramatically in the middle overs thanks to a magnificent batting display by Aaron Jones and Andries Gous.
Both Jones and Gous smashed brilliant half-centuries, with Jones reaching his fifty in a record-breaking 22 balls – the fastest ever by an American player in T20 cricket. Gous reached his milestone in 39 deliveries, showcasing his own aggressive batting style.

Living up to his pre-match promise of playing with a fearless attitude, Jones took charge in the middle overs. Between the 11th and 15th overs, the duo plundered 87 runs at a staggering run rate of 17.40, leaving the Canadian bowlers at the losing end.
Canada struggled to contain the onslaught, conceding wides, no-balls, and dropping crucial catches as the USA batters dominated the crease.
The match-winning partnership of 131 runs between Jones and Gous finally ended in the 16th over. Jones, however, remained unbeaten on a breathtaking 94 runs from just 40 balls, sealing the victory for USA with a massive six.
Corey Anderson provided valuable support at the other end, finishing unbeaten alongside Jones as USA secured a memorable win by 7 wickets.
