BCCI to Conduct Review Without Major Changes

India’s captain, Virat Kohli, and head coach Gautam Gambhir were expected to retain their roles despite the series loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma, senior batter Virat Kohli, and head coach Gautam Gambhir are reportedly set to remain in their roles despite the series defeat in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

As per an IANS report, Gambhir is expected to continue as head coach for India’s upcoming campaigns, including the 2025 Champions Trophy and the crucial five-match Test series in England this June. Rohit and Kohli, under scrutiny for their underwhelming performances in Australia, are also likely to feature in the England series.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to conduct a review meeting for the Australia tour but reportedly does not hold Gambhir responsible for the loss. “Yes, there will be a review meeting but no firing. C’mon, you can’t sack a coach for the batters’ poor show in one series. Gautam Gambhir will remain the coach, and Virat and Rohit will feature in the England series. The focus is Champions Trophy,” IANS cited BCCI sources as saying.

India started the series on a high note, winning the first Test. However, Australia bounced back to win three of the next four matches, clinching the series. Kohli managed just 190 runs in five Tests, with only one fifty-plus score, while Rohit contributed a mere 31 runs in five innings and even stepped aside from the playing XI in the final Test.

Gambhir Ignores Questions On Ro-Ko’s Future

Gambhir, when questioned about the future of Kohli and Rohit, refrained from giving a definitive response. “I can’t talk about the future of any player. It is up to them as well. But yes, what I can say is that they still have hunger and passion; they are tough people. Hopefully, they can continue to take Indian cricket forward. But ultimately, as we all know, whatever they plan, it will be in the best interest of Indian cricket,” Gambhir said.

Despite Gambhir’s reassurances, he faced criticism for the team’s defensive strategies, including the heavy reliance on all-rounders, which neither delivered with the bat nor produced breakthroughs on challenging pitches.

As India missed qualification for the World Test Championship Final for the first time in three cycles, Gambhir’s record as head coach has also come under scrutiny. He has secured only three wins in 10 Tests, two of which were against Bangladesh at home. India’s next Test challenge will be the England tour in June, where the team will aim for a strong comeback.
