Virat Kohli arrived in New York to join the Indian team for the T20 World Cup but his participation in the warm-up match remains in doubt.
Indian cricket star Virat Kohli arrived at the team hotel in New York on Friday after a long flight, but his participation in the team’s only warm-up match against Bangladesh on Saturday remains uncertain.
The BCCI granted Kohli a short break following his team’s (RCB) elimination from the IPL playoffs. While other players reached the US earlier, Kohli stayed back in India before joining the team. He missed an optional practice session on Friday and opted for rest upon arrival.
“Virat Kohli has checked in at the team hotel, and after a long flight, he will be taking a rest,” a senior BCCI source confirmed to Hindustan Times.
Kohli has missed three training sessions so far as India gears up to potentially end their 11-year wait for a major ICC trophy. However, his recent form is promising, as he led the IPL in run-scoring with 741 runs in 15 matches. Even if he sits out the warm-up match, he will have three more practice sessions before India’s opening T20 World Cup match against Ireland on June 5th.
Team India has only played three T20 internationals this year, winning all three against Afghanistan in January. They will be looking to avoid a repeat of their recent setbacks, including a semifinal loss to England in the 2022 T20 World Cup and defeats in the finals of both the 2023 ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship against Australia. The T20 World Cup kicks off on June 2nd, with India aiming to lift the trophy this year.
