RCB Considering Kohli as Captain for 2025
RCB reportedly engaged with Virat Kohli to discuss his possible return as captain after Faf du Plessis’ departure ahead of the mega-auction.
Virat Kohli’s journey with Royal Challengers Bengaluru could take a familiar turn as reports suggest the franchise is in talks with the star batter to potentially reclaim the captaincy for the upcoming IPL 2025 season.
Kohli stepped down as captain before the IPL 2022 mega-auction, passing the baton to Faf du Plessis, who led the team to playoffs in two out of three seasons. However, RCB’s title quest remains unfulfilled, and with du Plessis recently released, the captaincy position is once again vacant ahead of the mega auction.
Sources revealed that RCB has held discussions with Kohli about taking on the captaincy once more. Kohli is reportedly interested, though any official decision will likely be made after the auction. RCB may also target established leaders such as KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, or Shreyas Iyer; however, if none are secured, Kohli is expected to step back into the leadership role.
In support of Kohli’s potential captaincy comeback, former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif remarked on Star Sports that the 35-year-old deserves the chance if he’s ready to lead again. Kaif believes Kohli may have drawn inspiration from Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who recently led India to a T20 World Cup victory.
Kaif Thinks Kohli Might Take Up RCB Captaincy Because of Rohit
“Earlier, he refused [to take the captaincy]. He asked the management to appoint someone new. He might have told them that we are playing well but not winning trophies or becoming champions, and so, you appoint someone else. Now, if he is willing to take back the captaincy [he should],” Kaif shared on Star Sports.
“He saw Rohit Sharma lift the T20 World Cup, he spent time with him, and maybe he’s inspired as well. With age, you get better, and if Virat thinks that he has learned something during the World Cup and from Rohit Sharma and wants to be a captain again, why not? If he wants to do captaincy again, he should,” Kaif added.

Notably, RCB has retained only three players ahead of the auction—Kohli for INR 21 crore, Rajat Patidar for INR 11 crore, and Yash Dayal for INR 5 crore—as they prepare to shape a competitive squad for IPL 2025.
