Anil Kumble shared that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma might not play for long in the ODI format.
Former India captain Anil Kumble has urged cricket fans to cherish the ongoing contributions of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, emphasizing that their participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup remains uncertain. The legendary spinner’s comments come as both stalwarts prepare for their international return in the upcoming Australia ODIs, following extended absences from competitive cricket.
With Rohit, 38, recently relieved of ODI captaincy duties and Kohli maintaining a low profile since Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2025 triumph four months ago, questions about their long-term future in the 50-over format have intensified. India are scheduled to play 27 ODIs before the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, but Kumble believes the focus should remain on appreciating their current contributions.
“Let us just celebrate the two players on the field. They have done so much for Indian cricket over the years,” Kumble stated during a discussion on JioHotstar. “You don’t know if… yes, in their heads, they have been thinking of 2027, but it’s still a couple of years from now.”

The former coach highlighted how Rohit’s transition away from leadership could actually benefit his game. “Now that Rohit is no longer the captain, even the burden and responsibility of captaining isn’t on him. So, it’s just about batting and enjoying every moment that they have on the field.”
Both veterans face the immediate challenge of regaining match rhythm during the Australia series, having last represented India during March’s Champions Trophy campaign before their IPL commitments. Kumble suggested they avoid looking too far ahead, noting, “I don’t think they need to think too far ahead in terms of 2027,” while acknowledging their enduring value to Indian cricket.
