Former cricketer Ajay Jadeja suggested promoting Virat Kohli to open the batting and Rohit Sharma to bat at number three for India in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Former Indian all-rounder Ajay Jadeja has suggested a change to India’s batting order for the upcoming T20 World Cup. In an interview with Jio Cinema, Jadeja proposed moving captain Rohit Sharma down to the number three spot and promoting Virat Kohli to open the innings.
“In my opinion, Virat Kohli should open the batting. Who should move down? Rohit Sharma can bat at number three. This will give him a bit more time to assess the situation on the field. As captain, he has a lot on his mind, so this might be a good strategy,” remarked Jadeja as quoted by the Times of India.
Jadeja went on to praise Kohli’s consistency, suggesting it would be beneficial to utilize him at the top of the order. “With Virat in the team, you know you’re getting consistency. The powerplay at the beginning of the inning allows him to settle in comfortably,” he explained.
While acknowledging the recent struggles of all-rounder Hardik Pandya, Jadeja defended his inclusion in the squad. “He’s a special player, a rare talent in India. He can bowl seam bowling and contribute significantly with the bat, which is a valuable combination,” Jadeja said, referring to the controversy surrounding Pandya’s appointment as captain of the Mumbai Indians IPL team.

Despite Pandya’s underwhelming IPL season, he will be the vice-captain at the T20 World Cup. “The selection wasn’t based on current form, that’s for sure. It depends on the team’s strategy. One thing I notice about this team is the lack of options in certain positions. They have established players, all very strong with their batting numbers and positions. Ultimately, the final decision will be up to Rohit,” Jadeja concluded.
