Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh advocated for Virat Kohli’s return as captain of RCB, citing his stellar performance in the ongoing IPL season and his potential to inject aggression and intent.
Harbhajan Singh, the former Indian off-spinner, advocated for Virat Kohli to reclaim the captaincy for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the upcoming season, praising Kohli’s exceptional performance in the current IPL season where he leads the run-scoring charts with 661 runs at a striking rate of 155.16. Expressing his views on the Star Sports’ Press Room, Harbhajan suggested that if RCB fails to qualify for the playoffs, they should consider reinstating Kohli as captain, emphasizing Kohli’s leadership qualities and his ability to understand the team’s cricketing needs.
Reflecting on RCB’s recent resurgence, Harbhajan highlighted the team’s aggressive and intent-filled style of play, which aligns with Kohli’s leadership approach. He expressed his desire to see Kohli continue leading the team, attributing their recent success to Kohli’s leadership style.
“If they don’t qualify, they should look to get some Indian guy. Why not bring Virat Kohli back as captain? As Dhoni has a lot of impact in Chennai, Virat Kohli is a big leader, he knows the kind of cricket they need to play,” Harbhajan said.
“Now they are playing with a lot of aggression, a lot of intent and that is what Virat Kohli brings. I would like to see Virat Kohli leading the side going forward,” he added.
The franchise faces a significant decision regarding the retention of current skipper Faf du Plessis, aged 39, whose batting form has notably declined, accumulating only 367 runs at an average of 28.23 and a strike rate of 168.35. With the potential financial gains from releasing Faf and the urgent need for quality additions to the bowling attack, the Bengaluru-based team may opt for a strategic move in the upcoming mega auctions.
As for the current season, their final league fixture against Chennai Super Kings at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on May 18 is crucial. Both teams will fiercely compete, with victory potentially securing a playoff berth.
