Kevin Pietersen suggested Virat Kohli consider leaving RCB to chase an IPL title and proposed the Delhi Capitals as a potential new home.
Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has sparked debate by suggesting that Virat Kohli should consider leaving the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to finally win an Indian Premier League (IPL) title.
RCB’s recent eliminator loss to the Rajasthan Royals extended their IPL title drought to 17 years. A visibly disappointed Kohli, despite leading the tournament in run-scoring (Orange Cap), remains without an IPL championship.
“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Great athletes in other sports have left teams to chase glory elsewhere. Virat has given his all—another Orange Cap, another year of leading from the front—yet RCB keeps falling short,” Pietersen said on Star Sports.
Pietersen acknowledged the brand value Kohli brings to RCB but believes the star batter deserves an IPL trophy. “He deserves to play for a team that can help him achieve that dream,” Pietersen said.
Interestingly, Pietersen suggested the Delhi Capitals as a potential landing spot for Kohli. While the Delhi franchise, led by Rishabh Pant, has not won the IPL either, Pietersen thinks a return to his hometown could be a winning formula.
“Delhi is where Virat needs to go. He could be closer to his family in Delhi and spend more time at home. He’s a Delhi boy, after all. Why not go back? Delhi is just as desperate for a title as RCB,” Pietersen proposed.
Suggesting a shocking proposal, to support his argument, Pietersen referenced famous footballers like David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Harry Kane who left their long-standing clubs for new opportunities.
“I think it’s about time Virat thought long and hard. Beckham left, Ronaldo left, Messi left, and Harry Kane just left Spurs and went to Bayern Munich,” concluded the former cricketer.
