Usain Bolt named Virat Kohli as the standout player of the current generation and also expressed his passion for cricket.

Legendary sprinter Usain Bolt, the new ambassador for the ICC T20 World Cup, revealed his deep passion for cricket, a sport ingrained in him by his cricket-fanatic father.

“Cricket’s in my blood. Being an ambassador is amazing, a way to reconnect with the sport after my childhood dream of becoming a cricketer never came true,” said Bolt in an interview, as quoted by NDTV.

While Bolt boasts eight Olympic gold medals and a record-breaking career, his excitement for cricket was evident. He even confessed to missing live matches, including the IPL, due to his busy travel schedule. “T20 is my favorite format, hands down. It’s the perfect blend of strategy and speed, everything a great game needs,” added Bolt.

This love for speed is not surprising, considering Bolt’s background. He believes T20’s fast-paced nature is the future, especially in the Caribbean. “People love the excitement, the big hitters,” he said, acknowledging the format’s growing popularity over Test matches.

However, Bolt is not blind to the sport’s growth potential in the US, especially with the upcoming World Cup. “The game can definitely grow here. Having a major event sparks curiosity and interest,” added the sprinter.

While Bolt’s cricketing experience may be limited to watching with his father, his admiration for legendary players shines through. “Over the years, one of my favourites growing up was Wasim Akram because of the in-swinging yorker that he had. Of course, Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose, all these guys that I admired over the years, they were so dominant in their space.” Did he like anyone in the Indian team? “Like my father, I always support the West Indies (laughs). But yes, I have also been a Sachin Tendulkar fan. He and Brian Lara were part of my life growing up. It was a great rivalry,” Bolt recalled.

Looking at the current generation, Bolt offered his praise for veteran Indian batter Virat Kohli. “Kohli is the standout one for sure.”

While legendary athletes back Kohli as one of the greats of the current generation, the 35-year-old batter recently revealed his post-retirement plans, saying, “Once I am done, I will be gone, you won’t see me for a while (smiles). So I want to give it everything I have till the time I play, and that’s the only thing that keeps me going.”

While it is feasible to think of Kohli continuing for long, his recent hint points to an early retirement from cricket. Meanwhile, Kohli’s IPL franchise, RCB, is currently in a precarious position, needing a win in their upcoming match against CSK on May 18th to stay alive in the playoff race.
