Wasim Jaffer advocated for Virat Kohli-Yashasvi Jaiswal opening pair in the T20 World Cup.
Former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer has sparked debate about India’s batting order for the upcoming T20 World Cup, suggesting a bold move with youngsters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli at the top.
With established opener Rohit Sharma in the mix alongside Jaiswal and the ever-reliable Kohli, there’s been ongoing discussion about India’s ideal opening combination. Earlier this year, Rohit and Jaiswal did get a chance to partner at the top during the T20I series against Afghanistan, with Kohli batting at number 3. However, Jaffer believes a more attacking approach with Jaiswal and Kohli opening could be the key to success.
Jaffer shared his thoughts on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Kohli and Jaiswal should open in the World Cup. Rohit and SKY should bat 3 and 4, depending on the start we get. Rohit plays spin really well, so batting at 4 shouldn’t be a concern. #T20WorldCup #INDvPAK #INDvIRE.”
Jaiswal’s reputation as an explosive top-order batter is well-known. But Jaffer’s call for Kohli as an opener seems heavily influenced by the veteran batter’s exceptional performance during the recent IPL 2024 season. While opening the batting for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Kohli amassed a staggering 741 runs in just 15 matches, averaging a phenomenal 61.75 and striking at a blistering 154.69. This return to form after a slight dip in recent years has many fans and analysts re-evaluating Kohli’s role in the national team.

As per Jaffer’s proposal, both Jaiswal and Kohli are known for their ability to score quickly from the get-go. This aggressive approach could lay a strong foundation for India’s batting innings. Kohli’s vast experience, coupled with Jaiswal’s skills, could create a well-balanced opening pair. Also, moving Rohit Sharma down the order allows him to capitalise on his excellent ability to handle spin bowling in the middle overs.
Ultimately, the decision of who opens for India at the T20 World Cup rests with the team management. Jaffer’s suggestion has reignited the debate and given fans something to ponder. Whether India opts for the tried-and-tested approach or takes a gamble on a potentially explosive Jaiswal-Kohli combination remains to be seen in India’s opener for the tournament on June 5th, against Ireland.
