Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag criticised Pakistan’s selection process after Mohammad Amir’s return, suggesting favouritism by former critic Wahab Riaz, who now sits on the selection committee.

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag raised concerns about potential bias in Pakistan’s national team selection following Mohammad Amir’s recent comeback.

Wahab Riaz, who retired from international cricket last year, now serves as a member of the Pakistan selection committee. Just months after Riaz’s appointment, Amir, another former player, made a surprising return to the national team.

Sehwag, speaking on Cricbuzz, highlighted the timing of these events and questioned the selection process. “Wahaz Riaz and Mohammad Amir were both vocal critics of the Pakistan team on television. Now, one is a selector, and the other is back in the playing XI. They were criticising the team before, and now that they have influence, what are they doing?” said Sehwag.

Sehwag expressed his disapproval of favouritism in team selection. “Amir has played with me, so let’s take him on the team,” he said, referring to a hypothetical scenario involving India’s selection committee. “Now that Ajit Agarkar is the chairman of selectors for BCCI, he would say, ‘Come on, Viru, I’ll help you make a comeback into the team’. This is not done. You have to see the future. You have become a selector, and you have a job in hand. Use it in the right way; don’t do favours. Selectors have a responsibility to look towards the future and pick the best players for the team, not grant favours,” added the former cricketer.

Pakistan’s recent performance in the T20 World Cup has drawn criticism. Early losses to both the United States and India resulted in their elimination from the first round. These defeats have sparked discussions about potential changes to the team’s leadership and player selection. Reports also suggested that the team might undergo a revamp after their disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup.
