Virender Sehwag backs Abhishek, Bumrah, and Varun
Virender Sehwag picked Abhishek Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Varun Chakravarthy as India’s top match-winners for the Asia Cup 2025.
With the Asia Cup 2025 around the corner, former India opener Virender Sehwag shared his picks for the players he believes could be India’s biggest game-changers in the tournament. Sehwag named Abhishek Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Varun Chakravarthy as the three players who could make the difference.
India will begin their campaign on September 10 against the UAE, with Suryakumar Yadav leading a 15-member squad. The team includes a blend of youth and experience, featuring names like Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, and Rinku Singh. Placed in Group A alongside the UAE, Pakistan, and Oman, the defending champions are aiming for a strong start under new leadership.
The first name on Sehwag’s list was young opener Abhishek Sharma, who made his debut in July 2024. Currently ranked No. 1 in the ICC T20I batter rankings, the left-hander has impressed with his fearless batting style. “I think Abhishek Sharma can be a game-changer,” Sehwag said on Sony Sports.

Sehwag’s second pick was ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, whose workload and fitness have been under scrutiny in recent months. He missed the Champions Trophy due to a back injury and played only three Tests in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Despite this, Bumrah proved his form in the IPL 2025, where he claimed 18 wickets in 12 matches at an economy of 6.67. “Bumrah is always a game-changer,” Sehwag added.
Completing Sehwag’s list was Varun Chakravarthy, who has been in excellent form since his return. The mystery spinner topped the wicket charts against Bangladesh and later starred against England in a five-match T20I series earlier this year, where he was named Player of the Series. He has picked up 33 wickets in his last 18 T20Is with an economy rate just over seven.
“Varun Chakravarthy, with his mystery bowling, was very effective in the Champions Trophy and in the T20 format as well. So, these are some game-changers for India who can win matches on their own,” he concluded.
