VVS Laxman declined to renew his NCA term and will focus on family and commentary before coaching India on the Zimbabwe tour.
The National Cricket Academy (NCA) will be searching for a new head administrator as VVS Laxman reportedly declined to extend his current term, which expires later in 2024. This decision came after Laxman also opted out of applying for the head coach position of the Indian men’s senior team following Rahul Dravid’s tenure.
According to The Telegraph on June 24th, Laxman prioritises his family commitments after a demanding stint leading the NCA since his appointment in 2021. Reports suggest he might take on commentary for a brief period before taking a break from cricket.
Laxman, however, is still committed to his upcoming assignment with the Indian team for the Zimbabwe tour. He will serve as the head coach for this series, which is expected to feature a young squad led by captain Shubman Gill. The squad is also likely to include promising IPL talents like Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Riyan Parag, receiving their maiden international call-ups.

With the head coach position left vacant, Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman are said to be the frontrunners. However, Gambhir reportedly requested complete autonomy in selecting his support staff. If appointed, his coaching style could lead to significant changes within the team structure.
The new head coach will take charge starting with the Sri Lanka tour beginning on July 26th. This series follows the Zimbabwe tour, where India will play a five-match T20I series before travelling to Sri Lanka for a multi-format series.
