During the SA20 2024 Qualifier 1 Aiden Markram’s exceptional fielding saw him take a stunning one-handed diving catch to dismiss JJ Smuts, leaving the stadium in awe.
In a thrilling encounter between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20 2024 Qualifier 1, Aiden Markram stole the limelight with a breathtaking fielding display. During the 4th over, bowler Ottniel Baartman sent down a length ball to JJ Smuts, who attempted a flat-batted shot towards mid-on. However, Smuts mistimed the stroke, resulting in a toe-end that flew towards Markram’s position.
Showing incredible agility, Markram moved swiftly to his left, timed his jump to perfection, came flying in, and pulled off a sensational one-handed catch. The crowd was stunned and erupted in applause as Smuts was forced to depart.

Initially, the match saw favorable conditions for bowlers, but a rain delay improved batting prospects. Dawid Malan and Aiden Markram’s strong performances set a promising tone, yet Malan’s dismissal shifted momentum. Durban’s Super Giants’ bowlers, including Keshav Maharaj, Naveen-ul-Haq, and Junior Dala, excelled later on, limiting the Sunrisers’ score to 157/8.
In pursuit of 158, Durban’s Super Giants struggled from the outset, losing three wickets within the powerplay and failing to build momentum. Though Wiaan Mulder provided resistance, Heinrich Klaasen’s late efforts fell short, leaving the team unable to secure victory.
With this win, Sunrisers Eastern Cape are into the SA20 League 2024 finals.
