Andre Russell visibly struggled to keep up with the crowd noise that erupted when MS Dhoni came into bat during the CSK vs KKR IPL match.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) snapped Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) perfect run in the 2024 IPL season with a convincing win on April 8th. The match was also noteworthy for a moment of crowd frenzy that affected KKR player Andre Russell.
When MS Dhoni, fondly known as “Thala” by his fans, entered the crease to bat in the second inning, the crowd at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, CSK’s home ground, erupted in a show of support. The iconic stadium is known for its passionate fans and their signature “whistle podu” (blow the whistle) tradition. The noise proved overwhelming for Russell, who was stationed at a deep cover point. A video, now doing rounds on the internet, captured him attempting to block out the sound with his hands. Speaking of the match, chasing a modest target of 138 runs, CSK’s openers displayed aggressive intent from the start. Rachin Ravindra aggressively took on Mitchell Starc, while Ruturaj Gaikwad anchored the inning with a composed 67 off 58 balls. Daryl Mitchell provided a quickfire knock, adding momentum to the chase. Shivam Dube added some late fireworks, but it was ultimately Gaikwad’s unbeaten knock that sealed the deal for Chennai, maintaining their perfect home record this season.
The Kolkata Knight Riders found themselves short in defending the run chase. While Mitchell Starc could not impress, the spinners, Anukul Roy and Varun Chakaravarthy, also shared the same fate, partly due to the dew and their inconsistent bowling. However, Vaibhav Arora provided some relief by claiming the first wicket. Sunil Narine’s spell also yielded a wicket but was not enough to contain Chennai as the latter bagged their third win of the tournament.
