During the Big Bash League, Australia’s wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey recalled stumping Jonny Bairstow in the Ashes 2023, joking that he enjoys dismissing batters by stumping.
During the recent Big Bash League 2023-24 match between Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes, held at Adelaide Oval, wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey showcased his sharp skills by executing a quick stumping. Playing for Adelaide Strikers, Carey’s swift actions behind the stumps led to the dismissal of Nikhil Chaudhary during the seventh over. Chaudhary lost balance after collecting a wide down the leg side, which led to Carey swiftly removing the bails. Although Chaudhary was on the line, the third umpire deemed him out for a diamond duck.
Post the incident, Carey expressed his fondness for executing stumpings, mentioning that he enjoys dismissing batters, whether positioned up to the stumps or farther back.
“Yeah, always happy to get a stumping mate, however it comes. Up to the stumps or back. So that was good mate,” Carey said while engaging with the commentators.
JB: "Magnificent stumping, you would have been happy with that?"

During the second Ashes 2023 Test at Lord’s, Carey had also stumped Jonny Bairstow in England’s second innings. In the 52nd over, Bairstow moved out of the crease, giving Carey a chance for a swift stumping, leading to Bairstow being declared out. The incident sparked controversy, raising concerns about Australia’s sportsmanship. Some Australian players were even confronted by MCC members, resulting in their ban from the stadium’s long room.
