Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma rejoin India’s T20I squad for the upcoming three-match series against Afghanistan, marking their return to T20Is since the 2022 World Cup.
After a hiatus of over a year from the T20I format, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli mark their return to India’s T20I squad for the impending three-match series against Afghanistan. Since their last appearance in India’s T20 lineup during the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final loss to England, both stalwarts opted to focus on Test cricket and ODIs, aligning with the World Test Championship final and the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Marking Kohli’s return to the T20I squad, the ICC shared a video of Kohli’s remarkable six with the caption, “Relive Virat Kohli’s sensational six from the 2022 #T20WorldCup as he makes a return to India’s T20I squad”.
The video revisits Kohli’s six against Haris Rauf during the 2022 T20 World Cup showdown between India and Pakistan at the MCG. Amid a tense moment where India needed 28 runs from eight balls, Kohli’s explosive batting altered the game’s course.
Facing Rauf’s tough bowling, Kohli’s two consecutive sixes turned the tables in India’s favor. Commentator Harsha Bhogle’s enthusiastic exclamation of “Kohli goes down the ground, Kohli goes out of the ground” during that moment remains a lasting memory for the fans.
The ICC also honored Kohli on his 35th birthday by declaring this incredible shot as the ‘Shot of the Century’.
Rohit and Kohli’s inclusion in the Afghanistan squad signals their reintegration into India’s T20 plans, gearing up for the forthcoming T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA.
After the three T20Is against Afghanistan from January 11 to 17, India will face England from January 25 to March 11. Subsequently, players will join their IPL teams for the 2024 season, wrapping up just weeks before the T20 World Cup starting on June 1.
