Sanjay Manjrekar cautioned the Wankhede Stadium crowd to exhibit appropriate behavior following loud jeers directed at the new Mumbai captain, Hardik Pandya.
In a startling incident during the ongoing IPL 2024 match at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, fans expressed their discontent by booing new Mumbai Indians captain, Hardik Pandya, as he approached for the toss against Rajasthan Royals. The intensity of the boos drowned out broadcaster Sanjay Manjrekar’s voice, who was conducting the toss.
Pandya’s captaincy was met with vocal opposition, with chants of “Rohit, Rohit” echoing throughout the stadium, indicating strong support for former captain Rohit Sharma. Despite attempts by Manjrekar to restore order by urging the crowd to “behave,” the booing persisted.
“MI captain Hardik Pandya. Big round of applause, ladies and gentlemen. Behave,” Manjrekar said as the fans booed the captain.
In the first two games of IPL 2024, Hardik Pandya faced boos from Mumbai fans. He also experienced similar treatment from Gujarat Titans’ fans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, given his departure from the franchise after leading them to the title in the inaugural season.
“I’ve never seen that before, a captain being booed at the toss. There’s no doubt about the kind of player he is. There’s also no doubt about the kind of leader he is, two finals at GT in two years,” Eoin Morgan had said in the pre-match show.
On the match front, RR won the toss and chose to chase first. Despite losing the toss, Hardik expressed excitement about the upcoming match, emphasizing the team’s commitment to playing an enjoyable brand of cricket.
