Sydney Cricket Ground’s Instagram recently unveiled a reel featuring Nathan Lyon, shedding light on his memories of David Warner and the formidable opponents he faced in cricket. Lyon, when quizzed about the toughest player he’s encountered, expressed the difficulty in singling out one amidst the game’s greats.
“That’s a very hard question. I have played against some of the greats of the game. I’ll give you the top 3, which would be Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, and AB de Villiers,” the Aussie bowler said.
Delving into Warner’s memorable innings at the SCG, Lyon, reminiscing about their extensive 13-year partnership, recalled several remarkable centuries by Warner. Yet, one particular innings stood out, against the West Indies.
“Davey Warner’s best innings—I’ve played with Dave for the last 13 years, and I have a lot of fond memories. Here at the SCG, several hundreds come to mind, but one in a session against the West Indies, I believe,” answered Lyon.
During the Pakistan series, Lyon achieved a milestone by securing his 500th Test wicket. Initially denied an lbw against Faheem Ashraf, Australia’s successful review confirmed the ball’s trajectory toward the leg stump.
Lyon now stands alongside Shane Warne (708 wickets) and Glenn McGrath (563) as one of Australia’s bowlers to reach the coveted 500-wicket mark. Expressing his pride, Lyon reflected on his journey, acknowledging the distant dream of achieving this milestone from his beginnings in country NSW.
