Delhi Capitals suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the WPL 2024 final against Royal Challengers Bangalore, leaving captain Meg Lanning in tears as her team fell short for the second consecutive season.
Meg Lanning, leading Delhi Capitals, faced a devastating loss as Royal Challengers Bangalore emerged victorious in the WPL 2024 final. Despite a strong start from Lanning and Shafali Verma, DC’s hopes dwindled after Shafali’s dismissal triggered a collapse.
RCB’s spinners, particularly Shreyanka Patil with four wickets and Asha Sobhana with two, dominated, restricting DC to a meager 113 runs. In response, RCB pursued the target methodically, losing only two wickets in the process.
As Bangalore players celebrated wildly, Lanning stood alone, visibly devastated, tears streaming down her face as she covered it with a handkerchief. Delhi support staff and team were seen consoling the skipper. It was the second time she could not lead Delhi to victory, having lost in the final last year.
“Obviously disappointing not to get it done. Finals are about playing well on the day. Congratulations to RCB – you outplayed us tonight. It all happened relatively quickly as it tends to do. As we’ve seen in this tournament, crazy things happen. Full credit to RCB, they fought back really nicely and deserved the win,” Lanning said, acknowledging RCB’s superior performance in the final.
Sourav Ganguly, DC’s Director of Cricket, also praised the team’s consistent efforts despite falling short in the final, affirming their potential to clinch the title in the future. He also commended RCB for their remarkable turnaround in the tournament, going from third in the league to champions.
