In a recent talk show held by Star Sports, Sunil Gavaskar praised MS Dhoni for his determined leadership that contributed to CSK’s growth.
Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar recently highlighted MS Dhoni’s leadership as the key reason behind Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) success in the IPL. Speaking on a Star Sports talk show, Gavaskar revealed his fondness for both the Mumbai Indians (MI) and CSK and spoke in praise of the former Indian skipper.
In a video shared by Star Sports on their official X handle, when Gavaskar was asked about Dhoni’s ability to get the best out of his players, the former cricketer replied, “Aur isiliye toh Thala for a reason hai na (That’s why he’s called ‘Thala’ (leader) for a reason,” to a cheering audience. Gavaskar explained that a captain’s ability to manage a diverse team and keep everyone motivated is crucial. He said, “Because the captain should have the ability to bring out the best from players who come from different countries and from different cities of India and play for the collective goal of the team, that is win the IPL trophy after 6 weeks. For that, it may happen sometimes that you may have good players but you have to keep them out of the playing XI sometimes because of the team combination,” as quoted by the Times of India

Gavaskar further elaborated, “But while doing that, you have to make sure that that player doesn’t feel that he is useless. You are very important for us and very valuable for us. All these abilities are with MSD, Isiliye Thala, for a reason.”
Notably, Gavaskar also shared that MI and CSK are two of his favourite teams, and this came as both MI and CSK prepare for a much-anticipated clash on April 14th. While Hardik Pandya has taken over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma for MI, CSK announced Ruturaj as Dhoni’s successor. While the former seemed to be struggling during its initial matches, CSK comfortably sits in the third position and is expected to accumulate more points under Gaikwad’s captaincy to ensure the playoff spot.
