Virat Kohli, upon catching Dean Elgar’s final dismissal, urged the team not to celebrate, instead signaling them to bow down in a tribute, followed by a warm hug from Kohli.
An eventful Day 1 at Newlands, Cape Town saw a staggering 23 wickets tumble. South Africa, choosing to bat first, collapsed for a mere 55 runs, with Mohammed Siraj clinching his career-best Test figures of 6/15. India, in response, crumbled for 153, losing their last six wickets without adding any runs.
Amidst the intense action, a touching moment unfolded as Virat Kohli directed all players to pay homage to Dean Elgar, who retired from Test cricket, after his dismissal.
During the 11th over of South Africa’s innings, Mukesh Kumar’s delivery led to Elgar edging straight to Kohli at first slip. Kohli, after securing the catch, gestured to the Indian dressing room, signaling them to pay homage to Elgar for his remarkable Test career. Kohli then approached Elgar, sharing a warm hug, while teammates like Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, and others offered gestures of appreciation.
The entire stadium honored Elgar’s 86th Test appearance with a resounding reception. As Elgar headed back to the pavilion, the Indian support staff, including head coach Rahul Dravid, also paid their respects.
