DC’s head coach, Ricky Ponting, was dejected and disappointed with the team’s poor performance in Vizag and expressed his thoughts on what could have been done better.

Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting expressed his disappointment with his team’s performance in their crushing defeat to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Wednesday, April 3rd.

The Capitals’ bowlers were taken to the cleaners early on, conceding a staggering 88 runs in the powerplay after KKR opted to bat first. This undisciplined bowling display set the tone for a forgettable night for DC, as KKR posted 272 runs on the board.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Ponting did not mince words, admitting he was “embarrassed” by his team’s performance, particularly in the first half of the match. He highlighted several areas of concern, including the excessive number of extras conceded by the bowlers and the team’s slow over rate, which resulted in a hefty fine for captain Rishabh Pant.

“I was almost embarrassed with our first half of the game today. To concede that many runs, we bowled 17 wides, and it took us two hours to bowl our overs as well. A lot of things happened in this game that were unacceptable,” said Ponting at the post-match press conference, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

However, he downplayed the missed review opportunities by Pant, suggesting they were minor issues compared to the team’s broader struggles. “At the end of the day, they are little things. There are other bigger concerns for us with the way we bowled, some of the field placements we had set, and just how long it’s taking us to get around. We can’t afford to do that; no other team is doing that. It probably didn’t cost us today because they’d have gotten 250 anyway, but going forward in the tournament, it will definitely cost us something if we can’t fix it,” added Ponting.

DC’s bowlers were unable to restrict KKR after their strong start, with Sunil Narine bashing 85 runs and young batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi impressing on his IPL debut with a quickfire 54 off just 27 balls.

Chasing a challenging 273-run target, DC were dismissed for 166 runs within 18 overs. While half-centuries from Pant and Tristan Stubbs offered some consolation, the defeat leaves DC positioned in ninth place on the points table.
