The West Indies, despite a shaky start with the bat, emerged victorious by 13 runs against New Zealand and qualified for the Super-8 stage.
New Zealand won the toss and put the West Indies to bat first at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad. The Indians, though, slumped to 30/5 within seven overs. The Kiwi pace attack, led by Trent Boult (3/16) and Tim Southee’s fiery spell, ripped through the top and middle order.
Despite the early collapse, the West Indies showed resilience in the middle overs. Sherfane Rutherford provided much-needed stability with a blazing knock of 68 runs off just 39 balls. Valuable contributions from other batters helped them post a respectable total of 149/9 on the board.
New Zealand’s bowling attack showcased their collective strength. Lockie Ferguson and Tim Southee chipped in with two wickets each, while Jimmy Neesham and Mitchell Santner took one wicket each.
New Zealand’s struggles continued as they chased a modest target of 150 set by West Indies. Their batting woes echoed the early woes of the Windies innings. Openers crumbled early, with Devon Conway dismissed for just 5 runs. Captain Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra followed suit within the first 9 overs, leaving the Kiwis in a risky position.
Finn Allen offered some fight with a 26-run knock, but it was not enough. Glenn Phillips, batting at number four, provided a glimmer of hope with a 40-run knock off 33 balls. However, his dismissal by Alzarri Joseph in the 18th over shattered New Zealand’s hopes.
West Indies bowlers tightened their grip, with Alzarri Joseph leading the charge with a four-wicket haul. Gudakesh Motie provided excellent support, taking 3 wickets. Andre Russell and Akeal Hosein chipped in with a wicket each.
Needing 33 runs off the final over, Mitchell Santner tried to salvage the chase with a late flourish. However, Romario Shepherd held his nerve and successfully defended the target, sealing a crucial 13-run victory for the West Indies.
