Cricket West Indies (CWI) has recognized Shamar Joseph’s outstanding performance in the second Test against Australia, rewarding him with an upgrade from his current Franchise contract.
On Thursday, February 1, Cricket West Indies (CWI) revealed that Shamar Joseph earned an upgrade from his existing Franchise contract to an International retainer contract. This decision followed Joseph’s exceptional performance in the second Test against Australia, where his remarkable spell played a crucial role in the Windies securing their first victory in Australia since 1997 with an eight-run win in Brisbane.
On the fourth day of the second Test, Shamar Joseph’s participation hung in the balance after a toe injury caused him to retire hurt from a searing yorker by Mitchell Starc in the third innings. However, in a stunning turn of events, the 24-year-old, despite the injury, delivered a remarkable spell of 7/68 in 12 consecutive overs.
Facing a target of 216, Australia seemed on track for victory before Joseph’s heroics. Despite the toe setback, he led the West Indies to their first win in Australia in 27 years, bowling out Australia for 207 and securing a memorable eight-run victory at the Gabba on Sunday.
Emerging as the face of West Indies’ historic second Test win, Shamar Joseph’s remarkable story has reignited interest, among fans and the cricket fraternity. Following the match, Shamar expressed his determination, stating to his captain that he would bowl until the last wicket falls, undeterred by a toe injury.
Born into a family of eight siblings, Shamar, who once worked as a security guard to support his family, made his first-class debut in February 2023 against Barbados in the West Indies championships. Just three months ago, he served as a net bowler in the Caribbean Premier League.
During the Gabba Test clash, Joseph secured not only the Player of the Match but also the Player of the Series awards, earning commendation from Pat Cummins, who lauded the young cricketer as a ‘superstar.’ This significant win resulted in the series concluding on an even keel, with both teams finishing with a 1-1 draw.
